Victoria,
Hey what's going on... when I start to feel stressed I try and change my thoughts. Maybe turn on some music you like and take out paper and draw a little. I also sometimes will go for a walk or watch a little TV. Lately I've been working in my journal, I write a little and then I do a few drawing exercises. I'll be around a little while longer if you want to talk.

Hi Victoria. Have you seen the list of famous people with bipolar disorder? Take a look because I think you will be surprised. Many of us feel damaged at our low points but we are far from intellectually impaired. There is no way to sugar coat episodes of mixed emotions and very few people understand what we are going through. That's the challenge, to live the life that has been handed to us. Sure I want to be steady, I also want to be rich and what the hell let's throw in handsome while we're at it.
It just isn't so. We are far better off than the poor folks with bipolar 100 or even 50 years ago, perhaps many of them where driven to extremes during enormous periods of stress. The people around them may have even thought they where mentally impaired. But we are 'lucky' we have resources, we have each other at the touch of a finger and at the speed of light.
Your doctor is your main source of qualified medical help. As they say, it's not a cure it's a process. But you and I have to be willing and equal parts of that process. Meds work, meds have undesirable side effects, find a middle ground. That's a process.
I fear what you fear, having a meltdown in public. Being 'outed' so to speak. It's always best to have an emergency plan ready. This usually involves having a way to dampen a manic episode. It may be meds or a way to walk away from an escalating situation or it may require retiring to a safe place. The point is to be aware of our limits and not to exceed them. I know it isn't easy but we are only bipolar and certainly not intellectually impaired.
Be strong, you can do it.

When I lost my mind I became all heart.
